Preface

It’s a timeless problem, how to say what you feel, which words to choose, how to string them together. And the problem is never more troubling than when the subject is love.

100 Words for Lovers is intended to show how people have express their desire, their affection, their joy, their frustration, and their sadness when they are in love----talented and sensitive people coping with matters of the heart.

Specifically, the book places in evidence the words that creative writers and lovers in real life have used to convey passions, make themselves understood, describe the heart’s complaint, and observe the ironies of romantic predicaments.

In this way the book is somewhat different from its predecessors in the 100 words series, such as 100 Words to Make You Sound Great and 100 Words to Make You Sound Smart. These books showcase words that we all should know and put to good use in our efforts to be clear and convincing. They are primarily intended as vocabulary builders and reinforcers. They recommend words that we may met before but don’t have at our fingertips.

By contrast, most of words in 100 Words for Lovers are quite ordinary words, words like desire, kiss, and passion, that no one needs to explain to us. The point of this book is to celebrate these words as a way of coming to terms with the powerful movements of the heart and the fearsome dangers they entail.

To be sure, the book has some exotic and unfamiliar words, such as callipygian, inamorata, and osculation. And there are out-of-the-ordinary and somewhat formal words like assignation, dalliance, and troth. These words have their place too in the time-honored tradition of close encounters and communications.

To make its case, the book includes quotations from Renaissance and Jacobean poets as well as contemporary fiction writers, from recent film and television scripts as well as love letters from bygone eras. The English language may have changed, human culture may have changed, but the emotions remain the same.

And these emotions are what you will feel yourself as you read this book, the words and their quotations building like a wave from thought to thought, from page to page. To love is to live fully, and this book is meant to help you make the most of every opportunity as you speak and write about love.

                                   Executive Editor

To love is to live fully.
