In this small talk lesson we'll discuss greetings and salutations. 'Greetings' are what you say when meeting someone. 'Salutation' can be used to say hello, or goodbye. In this lesson you can learn some common words and phrases you can use when you meet someone or say goodbye to someone. Of course you know the old boring words 'hello' and 'hi', but for your friends you can also say 'hey' or 'what's up?' as a greeting. (But they are a little informal)'What's up?' or 'what's going on?' can just be used to say hello or actually as a way of asking them what is going on. 'Nice to meet you' should ONLY be used for the FIRST time you meet someone. After that you should say 'nice/good to see you again' or 'it was great meeting you again.' It sounds very strange to say 'nice to meet you' to someone that you have met before, and may make that person feel like you forgot the first time you met them! For a formal 'goodbye' you can say 'farewell', 'have a good day/evening/night', or a phrase like 'until we meet again', though this sounds a little more like old English. More casual ways include 'catch ya later', 'see ya later', 'see ya', 'peace out', 'peace', 'later', and 'have a good one'.*we don't usually say 'bye-bye' unless it is to very young children, so some foreigners may feel it is funny when you say that to them. English has many words from other languages, including some for hello and goodbye, such as:'Hola'- hello (Spanish)'Aloha'- hello/goodbye (Hawaiian) *mostly just used for hello'Ciao'- hello/goodbye (Italian) *mostly used for goodbye'Sayonara'- goodbye (Japanese)'Adios'- goodbye (Spanish)One funny/interesting way of saying goodbye to someone in an angry way is:'Don't let the door hit you on the way out' Can you think of any words or phrases that I didn't include?
