online、on line、on the line
這三個長得那么像的詞和詞組
究竟是有關(guān)系還是沒關(guān)系呢？
挑戰(zhàn)菌就和大家講講line的表達吧！
on line主要有兩個意思。首先，在之前join的表達中，其中就提到line有隊伍的意思，on line = wait in a line of people，意思就是排在隊伍里。
另外，on line有在線、上線的意思，就等于online。大家平時登陸QQ或游戲的上線，就是用online表示
而on the line就和上網(wǎng)排隊沒有關(guān)系了。on the line表示處在危險狀態(tài)、命懸一線。
一般是put/lay sth on the line，可以是jobs、career、reputation、friendship等等；也可以用put one's neck/oneself on the line，表示把...置于危險的狀態(tài)。
除此之外，on the line還有打電話、保持通話的意思，這時候line相當(dāng)于phone。
Eg
This shouldn't take much longer—Mom's on line to pay right now.
這花不了多長時間，媽媽已經(jīng)排在付款的隊伍里。
By making such a controversial movie, he has really put his reputation on the line.
拍出這樣一部有爭議的電影，他真是冒著名聲盡毀的風(fēng)險。
line可以表示兩個區(qū)域之間人為假設(shè)的線，就比如經(jīng)線緯線，國際日期變更線這類地理名詞，或是國界線、州界線這類地區(qū)邊線。

line有觀點、態(tài)度的意思，相當(dāng)于opinion/attitude。official line就是官方立場、官方說法的意思，一般指的是國家層面的。
我們再看看一個有相同line的表達：take a tough/firm/hard line on sth，意思就是對...采取嚴(yán)厲態(tài)度。
Eg
Japan's official line is that it does not allow the immigration of unskilled foreign labourers.
日本的官方說法是，不允許非熟練外國勞動力移民。
The school takes a very tough line on drugs.
學(xué)校對毒品采取了嚴(yán)厲態(tài)度。
out of line字面看是超過某條線，可以簡單地理解成越界、不在一條直線上，這里的越界指的是真是存在，可以被看見的情況。
out of line也可以引申為出格、過分、不合適的意思。可以用get/step out of line表示。
Eg
I told you not to get out of line. Now, get back in line.
我告訴過你不要越界，現(xiàn)在回到你的隊伍里。
He was out of line when he talked back to his mother.
他跟媽媽頂嘴時有些過分了。
