食物到了保質(zhì)期真的就不能吃了嗎？
美國馬里蘭州的男子Scott Nash就一直想知道這個答案。

三年前，他有了一個瘋狂的想法：吃了過期食物，會怎么樣？
他的第一個試驗品是一杯過期半年的酸奶。（非專業(yè)人士請不要輕易嘗試。）
He had forgotten the yogurt in the fridge of his old cabin in Virginia in the Spring and only found it again when returned in the Fall. By that time it was already half a year past its expiration date, but that didn’t stop him from mixing it with his smoothie and chugging it down.
春天的時候他在弗吉尼亞老家的冰箱里放了一杯酸奶是直到秋天回家時才發(fā)現(xiàn)還有這樣東西。等他發(fā)現(xiàn)這杯酸奶的時候，它已經(jīng)過期半年了，但是他依舊把它拿來做奶昔，并且一飲而下。
It didn’t taste funny and he didn’t experience any health problems after consuming it.
它嘗起來沒什么怪味，而且吃完之后Scott也沒有感到任何不適。

And these dates need to be set to match reality. Some items don’t need a date at all – like salt, canned goods, and baby wipes.

During the year-long experiment Scott Nash and his family ate anything from tortillas that were a year past date, yogurt that was seven, eight or nine months past date, meats that were weeks past their expiration dates, and heavy cream that was a few months past the dates stamped on its label.
在為期一年的實驗中，Scott Nash和他的家人吃了過期一年的玉米粉餅，分別過期七、八、九個月的酸奶，過期幾周的肉，過期幾個月的奶油。
At one point, he even used the butter that had become moldy after being left for months in the fridge. He just scraped off the mold, and used it for cooking. And everyone was fine.
有一次，他甚至吃了在冰箱中放置數(shù)月后發(fā)霉的黃油。刮掉表面的毛毛，繼續(xù)用它做飯。每個人都活的好好的。
There was also minced beef (15 days old), smoked trout (24 days past sell-by), smoked turkey (six weeks past use-by), chicken broth (more than three months past best-before) and roasted tomatoes (seven months past sell-by). Still nothing happened.
還有放了15天的碎牛肉，過期24天的煙熏鱒魚，過期6周的煙熏火雞，過期3個月的雞湯，過期7個月的烤番茄。照舊啥事也沒有發(fā)生。

有時候Scott也會扔掉一些東西，但是他憑的是經(jīng)驗，不是包裝袋上的保質(zhì)期。
Nash admits that some foods do go bad and have to be thrown away, but there are better ways to tell than checking the expiration date on the packaging.
不過Nash也承認，有些食物確實很糟糕，必須扔掉，但有更好的方法來判斷這些東西是否過期，而不是看包裝上日期。
If something looks, smells or tastes funny, you probably shouldn’t eat it, but most people suffer from something Nash calls “consumer anxiety disorder” which makes them discard perfectly good products just because of an arbitrary date.
如果某些東西看起來或者聞起來有點奇怪了，你就不應(yīng)該吃它了。但是Nash覺得大多數(shù)人患有“消費者焦慮癥”，這讓他們僅憑包裝袋上的日期就浪費了好東西。
He also warns readers about “Planned Obsolescence”, a strategy that corporations use to encourage consumers to throw away perfectly good products, so they buy new ones.
他還警告讀者“定時過期”是商家的陰謀論，是企業(yè)用來鼓勵消費者丟棄和浪費食物的策略，為了讓他們再買新產(chǎn)品。
