◆cattle n.
1. 表示“牲畜”(在美國英語只指牛類)，是一個表示復數(shù)意義的集體名詞(但不能有復數(shù)詞尾-s)。如：
The cattle are grazing. 牛在吃草。
Many cattle died in the drought. 許多牛在旱災時死了。
2. 要表示“?！钡念^數(shù)，可借助 head(頭)這個詞。如：ten head of cattle(10頭牛)，forty head of cattle(40頭牛)等，這些表達中的 head of 也可省略，即可說 ten cattle, forty cattle等，但是我們通常不說 one cattle, 而應說成 one head of cattle, 因為cattle 是一個表復數(shù)意義的集合名詞。同時應注意：以上各例中的head(頭)是一個單復數(shù)同形的名詞，所以沒用 heads 這樣的形式。
◆cause v. & n.
1. 用作動詞，有兩類用法需注意：
(1) 表示“造成”、“使(發(fā)生)”，其后可直接用造成的結果或發(fā)生的事情作賓語，也可接雙賓語或接不定式的復合結構作賓語。如：
Smoking can cause lung cancer. 吸煙可導致肺癌。
He caused his parents much unhappiness. 他弄得他父母很不愉快。
The cold weather caused the plants to die. 天氣寒冷凍死了植物。
(2) 表示“使”、“迫使”，通常接不定式的復合結構作賓語，注意不要受動詞 make 的影響而用錯句型。比較：
是什么使她哭了?
正：What caused her to cry? / What made her cry?
誤：What caused her cry [crying]? / What made her to cry?
這個壞消息使她傷心。
正：The bad news caused her to be sad.
正：The bad news made her sad.
誤：The bad news caused her sad.
2. 用作名詞，也有兩類用法需注意：
(1) 表示“原因”，通?？蓴?shù)。如：
Smoking is one of the causes of heart disease. 吸煙是引起心臟病的一種原因。
(2) 表示“理由”，通常不可數(shù)。如：
There is no cause for anxiety [to be anxious]. 沒有理由焦慮。
比較：
There is no effect without a cause. 沒有無因之果。
Don’t complain without (good) cause. 不要無故抱怨。
◆certain adj.
1. 表示“一定”或“確信”，通常用作表語，注意：
(1) 后接不定式時，表示說話人的看法，意為“一定會”、“肯定會”。如：
He’s certain to succeed (come). 他一定會成功(來)。
注：這類句型可作以下轉換：
It’s certain that he will succeed (come).
(2) 后接“of＋名詞(或動名詞)”或后接 that /whether從句等，表示句子主語的信念，意為“確信”、“自信”。如：
He is certain of success (winning). / He is certain that he can succeed (win). 他確信會成功(贏)。
注：有時后接介詞 about。如：
I’m quite certain about it. 我對此很有把握。
2. 表示“某一”、“某些”，通常用作定語。如：
A certain Mr Smiths called this afternoon. 有個叫史密斯先生的人今天下午來過電話。
He was absent for certain reasons. 由于種種原因他沒有出席。
3. 用于 for certain, 意為“肯定地”、“確切地”等。如：
I can’t say for certain where he lives. 我不敢肯定地說他住在什么地方。
4. 用于 make certain, 意為“弄清楚”、“弄得有把握”。如：
They made certain (that) they weren’t late. 他們有把握不遲到。
Arrive early at the cinema to make certain of getting a seat. 早點去電影院以便能弄個座位。
