“Why did you come to China?”
One of the most asked questions, yet also one of the most difficult to answer.
This morning's elevator conversation quickly found it's way to this question via this route:
Do you work or study here?
Work.
Where are you from?
California.
Then why did you come to China?
This question has vexed me because I don't quite know the answer. Occasionally I reply that when I know why I'm in China, then I'll probably go home.
One of the things that bothers me is that it is implied that the person wouldn't know why I came to China, as if they think coming here was a poor decision and are curious why I made it. This leads me to ponder, was it a poor decision? Thus it is something I'm constantly trying to define and decide for myself.
While there certainly is no definite answer, I am just curious to hear other people's thoughts on this question. Do you flippantly reply, or does it also make you question your life?
