Urbanization, as one of the most notable features of today's world, has always been marked by social mobility. Amidst this trend, more and more young people end up migrating to the cities for better education and work. In this essay, I will outline two main areas where such movement is likely to bring about more merits to both the young individuals and the society as a whole.
Some would argue that the ongoing trend would further widen the gap between cities and countrysides in terms of economic development. They claim, for example, that the economy is made fragile when food production becomes inadequate because of the huge burst of people from rural to urban areas. To some extent, side effects like this are inevitable. However, a closer examination of this issue tellingly reveals that the dark sides do not necessarily overshadow its bright ones.
There are clearly more advantages to this development. The most important area is the opportunity available to the young individuals. As the balance of power among groups of people has shifted both nationally and internationally, rural areas are losing its appeals in the provision for ample opportunities while developed cities are in much better position to provide young people with much wider range of possibilities to thrive. Another area in which this trend is beneficial is in considering the long-term advancement of the society. Such movement responds to the progress of cities when meeting the demand of sizable workforce. Young job seekers are relatively more energetic and creative, which in turn accelerates the realization of urbanization and modernization.
In summary, in spite of some negative influence, the evidence suggests that young migrants benefit from having wider access to opportunity in cities and the society, in general, is also a beneficiary when the sustainable flow of qualified workforce for economic development is taken into account.
