Stuart and Steve were twin brothers. Stuart loved to play basketball. But Steve loved to read books.
One day Stuart was playing basketball. He fell and broke his leg. Steve went to visit him in the hospital and brought him books on basketball. Stuart wasn’t going to read them at first. But then he began to look at them and saw there were ways he could play basketball better.
When Stuart’s leg started getting better, Steve helped him by going for walks with him. They walked and then sat and read their books.
Finally, Stuart could start playing. He showed Steve how to throw the ball. Steve found that he enjoyed playing basketball.
So you can see when something sad happens, something good may happen. Steve showed Stuart about books and Stuart showed Steve about basketball. So if you try showing your friends something that you like to do and they can show you something that they like to do, you can explore new things.

Music is not air. Neither is it water. But for many students, music is an important and enjoyable part of life. This can be shown from the survey on teenagers’ opinions about music.
Nearly 10,000 teenagers responded to the survey.
More than half, 52 percent(%)say that they listen to music whenever they are free. Just 0.5 percent of students say they never listen to music. Most listen to both English and Chinese songs.
But the survey shows that students have very different tastes and enjoy a number of styles. “Nowadays teenagers are diverse ( different from others), and that can be seen in our tastes, ” said a fifteen-year-old girl who is a pop fan but also likes the R&B of Jay Chow, a big favourite among students in the survey.
About 32 percent of students listen to Pop music. Behind Pop came R&B (28 percent ), Country ( 14 percent ), Jazz ( 9 percent ), Hip-hop ( 7 percent ).
Only about 10 percent are Rock ‘n’roll fans who say that the exciting rhythm(節(jié)拍)has the power that takes their minds off school work and exams.
It is the melody(旋律)rather than the lyrics or fame of singers that students like. Over 60 percent say they choose a song mainly because of the music.
“Good music makes me believe that it was written just for me –––– even if it is the first time I listen to it. I think that is why music is so important to young people –––– more than movies, more than TV,” one of the students said.
TV and movies are the main ways that students hear new songs or music. Forty-six percent of students say they are affected by music played on TV or in films. Friends ( 21 percent ) and radio ( 19 percent ) also play an important role in introducing music to teenagers.
Parents have the least effect on students’ tastes and do not enjoy the same music. Just three percent listen to music that their parents introduce them to. More than half of the teenagers surveyed, 54 percent, see nothing wrong with downloading music from the Internet.

Nowadays many new and useful inventions have come into use. If I were a scientist, I would have my own invention ––– a magic door, a door that can take me to every part of the world, just like Doraemon’s magic door.
Since our life is getting busier and busier, my magic door is really needed. The population of the world is rising(增長)day by day, and the number of cars used is getting larger. Therefore, traffic jam becomes a big problem to people in both poor and developed countries. Moreover, by using a large number of cars, people have to face another problem––– the pollution of the air. All those reasons lead to the need for such an invention like a magic door. It can take the place of ways of transportation.
Magic doors have many advantages. Firstly, you can go wherever you want in a minute. Just open the door and go through it, you can stand in another place. Two parts of the door are two parts of the world. Thus, magic doors can meet the need for discovering new places for people. Secondly, magic doors sometimes can even make people safe. Magic doors can be used in everyday life. If you dropped into a river by accident, for example, people would go there immediately to help out of danger by using magic doors.
All in all, people can benefit(受益)a lot from magic doors. If magic doors were invented and came into use widely, not just imagination, there would be a big change in our life!

十一. 書面表達(dá)(15分)
Possible version:
I’m a middle school student. I want to be a volunteer to help people. I think I’m the person who can get on well with the old. Although I am busy, I still want to have an opportunity to visit old people’s home as a volunteer. More than doing some cleaning for the old, performing a play with my friends is another thing I can do. Besides, loneliness is a problem they are facing. Talking with them is the best solution I come up with.
If I had another chance. I would help sick children in the hospital. I love children and I plan to put this love to good use by working in the hospital with sick children after school.
In a word, I would like to help people who need help.
