Good Morning, My Dear
By: Maidong*
Good morning, my dear
Last night I dreamed
I walked all night long
To find a well
To find that water carrier
My dear
Why didn’t you appear
In my dream last night
Was it because heavy snow closed the mountain pass
Or was it because
The grain that fell on the ground
Still glows with the heat of the sun
My dear
I have also been wrestling with those sounds
What makes them
So piercing
So loud that I have to shout at the top of my lungs
Good morning, my dear
Why does the sound of flight still disturb the air
Even though my wings are folded
My dear
I am still in touch with my soul
Sometimes I even imagine
We are shaking hands and saying goodbye
Looking forward to meeting again a hundred miles down the road
Or I am sitting on a rock and waiting
To exchange bodies with another soul
My dear
In last night’s dream there was a mirror
Shining upon the earth
Someone appeared from the mirror
Bearing flowers
Searching relentlessly for you
Ask me about the vicissitudes of life
And human sorrow
Ask me why there are monstrous waves in the sky
