影片從一個(gè)美國(guó)戰(zhàn)地記者的眼光看著名的奠邊府之役，1954年，在越南北部的一個(gè)名為「奠邊府」之處，超過(guò)2萬(wàn)名法軍與10萬(wàn)名越南軍在此展開(kāi)了一場(chǎng)長(zhǎng)達(dá)57天的大戰(zhàn)，最終強(qiáng)權(quán)法國(guó)被越南打敗，並喪失了統(tǒng)治權(quán)，越南人民終於結(jié)束七十年的殖民歷史恢復(fù)自治，此戰(zhàn)役也被譽(yù)為“軍事上的奇蹟”。導(dǎo)演曾在此戰(zhàn)役擔(dān)任戰(zhàn)地?cái)z影師被俘，本片可說(shuō)是他自身的戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)回憶錄。

關(guān)於戰(zhàn)事：

奠邊府戰(zhàn)役是法軍退出亞洲戰(zhàn)場(chǎng)關(guān)鍵性的一役。參與戰(zhàn)役的兩方分別為共產(chǎn)黨領(lǐng)導(dǎo)的越盟軍，由武元甲領(lǐng)軍，並有中國(guó)派出的軍事顧問(wèn)團(tuán)為後援，另一方則為法國(guó)的空降兵及外籍兵團(tuán)。

1954年3月13日，越南軍及越盟遊擊隊(duì)以相當(dāng)於數(shù)倍法軍的兵力對(duì)奠邊府進(jìn)攻，此役越軍大勝，擊斃法軍2,293人，俘虜10,998人，法國(guó)兩位少將砲兵司令及傘兵司令前後飲彈自盡殉國(guó)，宣示結(jié)束法國(guó)對(duì)越南自1884年中法戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)以來(lái)長(zhǎng)達(dá)七十年的殖民統(tǒng)治。法國(guó)導(dǎo)演皮耶爾史恩多夫（曾為戰(zhàn)俘）及越南導(dǎo)演胡權(quán)民先後皆拍攝過(guò)同名電影。

By the early 1950s, several generations of dedicated, independence-minded Vietnamese had fought the French to a standstill. This long conflict culminated in a battle along the Laotian border near the town of Dien Bien Phu in March, 1954, which the French narrowly lost. That loss led to a negotiated settlement and the partition of Vietnam. Broken promises and French stubbornness resulted in continued conflict in South Vietnam and the eventual involvement of the Americans. In this film, the wider human face of that 1954 conflict is seen through the eyes of an American reporter, played by Donald Pleasence, as he travels through Vietnam researching the story. In particular, it follows the fate of one group of soldiers, members of the French Foreign Legion, whom the reporter meets at a bar in Hanoi. It is a remarkable testament to political changes in the world that this French movie was filmed in Vietnam with the cooperation of the Vietnamese government.
