Brain Changes in Obese Kids With Diabetes Hinder Learning

Obese adolescents with type 2 diabetes may undergo changes in their brains that affect their learning in school‚ new research suggests.

The study involved 18 obese children with type 2 diabetes and children who were obese but did not have diabetes or pre–diabetes. Children with diabetes performed worse on tests of memory‚ spelling‚ and overall intellectual functioning. The children also underwent MRI scans‚ which showed changes in the white matter of the brains of the children with diabetes. Experts do not yet know how type 2 diabetes affects children’s thinking abilities. Dr. Antonio Convit‚ professor of psychiatry and medicine at the New York University Langone Medical Center‚ notes that “we know the brain uses sugar as source of metabolism‚ and insulin resistance interferes with the body’s ability to get more juice or sugar into the brain.” Researchers will attempt to determine if the cognitive damage from diabetes can be reversed by treating insulin resistance.
