勒內(nèi)·弗朗索瓦·吉蘭·馬格里特
René Fran?ois Ghislain Magritte
1898年11月21日－1967年8月15日，享年69歲。天蝎座。比利時的超現(xiàn)實主義畫家，畫風帶有明顯的符號語言，如《戴黑帽的男人》。他影響了今日許多插畫風格。

生于埃諾省萊西納，父親是裁縫，母親是女帽的銷售。童年時常常搬家，10歲時就開始學畫，1912年母親投河（桑布爾河）自殺（享年42歲），原因不明。當其母親的尸體被撈上來時，他當時在場，母親浮尸時被衣飾覆蓋著臉部在他腦海中留下深刻印象，這令他在1927年至1928年所的畫的人物也是被衣布覆蓋著臉孔，包括《愛人》（Les Amants），但他本人并不喜歡這個解釋。1913年馬格里特邂逅了他未來妻子 Georgette Berger（1922年結婚）。他青年時在布魯塞爾的比利時皇家美術學院就學兩年，1918年畢業(yè)后曾在壁紙工廠負責花紋設計。

1919年 開始對未來主義和奧費立體主義產(chǎn)生興趣，并受到大他十歲的意大利畫家基里訶的影響，開始了超現(xiàn)實主義的風格。
1926年 開始全職繪畫，并于同年畫成《迷失的騎師》(Le jockey perdu)，為第一幅超現(xiàn)實主義作品。并在1927年在布魯塞爾舉行首次的個人畫展，但遭到大量侮辱性的批評。這次失敗使他感到郁悶，于是他移居巴黎。后來他又回到布魯塞爾，與他的弟弟成立一間公司，賺取生活收入。

1927年到1930年間，移居巴黎。在這期間，他認識了安德烈·布勒東（André Breton），并加入了超現(xiàn)實主義者的行列，大量的創(chuàng)造出具有神秘語意的迷人畫作，同時也為許多時裝海報或樂譜封面進行商業(yè)平面設計，1936年他的作品曾到美利堅合眾國紐約展出，后來又在1965年現(xiàn)代藝術博物館、1992年大都會藝術博物館舉行回顧展。

在納粹德國占領比利時王國期間，他堅持留在布魯塞爾，因而與安德烈決裂。在這段時期，他放棄在作品中展現(xiàn)野蠻主義和超現(xiàn)實主義，后來又恢復了。他的畫風變化不大，但也有稍許改變，例如1943年-1944年的“雷諾阿時期”和1947年—1948年的“野獸派風格時期”等。

晚年他定居在比利時布魯塞爾。1967年8月15日因胰臟癌病逝，死后葬在蘇哈比公墓（Schaerbeek Cemetery）。
馬格里特是比利時最具影響力的當代藝術家，在西方現(xiàn)代藝術史上，他是最早關注“圖與詞”這一命題的。1929年12月，馬格里特在《超現(xiàn)實主義革命》上發(fā)表的《詞與圖》宣言，其中綜合呈現(xiàn)了藝術家在1920年代末超現(xiàn)實主義氛圍的歐洲，對詞圖關系的多種思考。他最有代表性的超現(xiàn)實主義畫作為《圖的背叛》（The Treachery of Images）。此畫將一個煙斗的圖像和“這不是一只煙斗”的句子并置。語言與圖像的并置構成了充滿矛盾張力的游戲：圖像煙斗并非真煙斗，是一張畫；而“這不是一只煙斗”的描述則與畫面本身形成悖論。語言學轉(zhuǎn)向是哲學領域在20世紀發(fā)生的重大變化。馬格里特則是將語言帶入造型藝術領域的關鍵人物。
如果美術史的核心問題是研究視覺圖像，那么“詞與圖”的問題重點就是視覺再現(xiàn)與語言的關系問題。

2012年12月21日，中國美術館、比利時瓦隆-布魯塞爾國際關系總署共同主辦《圖與詞：馬格利特以來》展覽。此展覽以馬格利特為原點，展示其后幾代藝術家對“圖與詞”命題的延伸探索。
