The University of Queensland convened the Translation and Cross-Cultural Communication Conference from Dec. 1-2, drawing more than 100 scholars specializing in Chinese-English translation.

The two-day meeting, which carried the theme of C-E (Chinese-English) Translation and Cross-Cultural Communication, was divided into 25 parallel sessions at which a wide range of topics were discussed, ranging from literature translation to culture clash in translation.

Professor Leong Ko, one of the organizers of the conference, was clear about the event's potential to aid the growth of Chinese-English translation in academic terms. "The meeting gathers the world's very best scholars and experts specializing in Chinese-English translation," he said. "It will definitely help enhance cooperation and understanding between peers in the field and advance the development of Chinese-English translation as an academic area."

The demand for Chinese-English translation has soared as more and more Chinese people have come to Australia for investment, emigration and education. Such increased demand made the need for such a conference, focusing solely on Chinese-English translation, all the more urgent.

"Before this conference, there had been no such meeting solely dedicated to C-E translation topic in Australia," said Professor Ko.
